Minerals and energy resources

South Australia is a globally important producer of copper, uranium and zircon and is stepping up production of iron ore, zinc, lead, silver, industrial minerals, gemstones and opal.

We are home to Australia’s largest onshore oil and gas province, and have an abundance of natural resources that are increasingly attracting investors in wind power, solar, geothermal and wave energy.

South Australia currently leads the nation in the uptake of wind and rooftop solar, and produces 41 per cent of the state’s energy from renewable sources.

With our sights set on Adelaide becoming the world’s first carbon neutral city, the state government is seeking to attract $10 billion in low carbon energy generation investment, together with start-ups and hi-tech companies seeking to develop new technologies.

Since 2015, the state government has supported an independent and comprehensive investigation into South Australia’s participation in the nuclear fuel cycle, with an outcome expected at the end of 2016.
